The busiest time for a fitness club is just after Christmas but many people stop attending within a few months so if you join a club you want to make sure they will motivate you enough to keep coming back. However, until you now what your goal is it will be difficult so you need to work out what you hope to achieve by joining a club. If you choose your club well you will probably be a member for a long time; the reverse is also true. The most important factor is where your club is located as the biggest reason for people giving up is because they have to go out of their way to get to it; so a location close to where you live or work is preferable.
Having a decent well qualified instructor is the next most important as a good instructor will encourage you to not only attend but to keep the fitness training up. They will also need to be aware of any physical limitations you may have or of any special needs before the training starts. You can ask the staff what services they offer, this will give you the chance to find out how helpful, friendly and professional they are. If you have an interest in learning martial arts for example, see if the fitness club arranges lessons as many clubs have resident professional in a number of fields.
You also need to know that their opening times are extensive as if they are short you may find the club becomes very busy or it might be difficult for you to fit in with their schedule. If your intention is to join a fitness club for the classes, see if they will let you try some before you become a member. It is also important to ensure the club has enough exercise and weight training equipment to meet the demand as there is nothing more frustrating than queuing for an item of equipment. One thing to look for is the age of the equipment; the older it is the more likely it is to break down which doesn’t look good on the club.
Almost all clubs have a healthy social calendar and this is a good time to get an invitation before you join and perhaps meet few people you might be able to get on with when you’re training. Whilst you are doing this research into the club, find out if the membership cost is fairly stable each year and if there are any other costs involved not mentioned on the club tariff. If you are serious about joining a fitness club, you will really need to look at more than one; after all it is your money! This may seem like a great deal of effort but if you find a club that you feel comfortable with, the chances are you won’t cancel your membership and will continue to attend on a regular basis.
